Callum Innes

Callum Innes is a Scottish abstract painter known for his refined, process-based work. Born in Edinburgh in 1962, he became known for a distinctive method of what he calls unpainting, applying color to the canvas and then partly removing or dissolving it with turpentine. The result is still fields of color with blurred edges and delicate washes that seem to hover.

His paintings are spare and precise, built as much on what is taken away as on what is added. He has been a prominent figure in British abstraction and a nominee for major art prizes. Innes's subtle, luminous canvases reward slow looking, revealing gentle shifts of tone and the traces of his careful working method.
