Edward Hopper

Edward Hopper was an American painter who turned ordinary modern scenes into images of deep loneliness. Born in New York in 1882, he spent years working as a commercial illustrator before his painting caught on. He is best known for quiet urban moments, a woman alone in a cafe, a gas station at dusk, figures sitting near windows, all lit by hard, flat light that makes the emptiness feel loud.

His most famous work, Nighthawks, shows a few late-night customers in a glowing diner, sealed off from the dark street outside. Hopper said little about hidden meanings and claimed he was mostly painting light, but the mood of isolation in his work has spoken to viewers for generations. He captured something true about American cities and the feeling of being alone in a crowd.
