George Morland

George Morland was an English painter known for charming scenes of rural life. Born in London in 1763 into an artistic family, he was a child prodigy who grew into a hugely popular painter of the countryside. He depicted stables, farmyards, country inns, and laborers with an easy naturalism that made his work beloved and widely reproduced as prints.

Despite his success, he led a chaotic, spendthrift life, often working hastily to pay off debts, and he died in difficult circumstances in 1804. At his best, his warm, unpretentious scenes of ordinary country life have real freshness and charm. Morland is remembered as a gifted painter of the everyday English countryside.
