Odysseus and Nausicaa by Giuseppe Bottani

Odysseus and Nausicaa

A naked man steps out of the bushes holding a branch of leaves in front of himself, and only one person in the group does not run away. That is the whole point of the scene. It comes from Book VI of Homer's Odyssey: Odysseus has been shipwrecked and washed up on the shore of the Phaeacians, exhausted and with nothing left. Princess Nausicaa has come down to the river with her handmaids to do the palace laundry, and you can spot the freshly washed linens draped over the branches at the right edge of the picture. When the stranger appears, the maids scatter, one of them already halfway behind a tree. Nausicaa holds her ground, and the story that follows has her giving him clothes, food, and directions to her father's palace, which sets him on the last leg of his long journey home.

Giuseppe Bottani painted this in eighteenth century Italy, working in a Neoclassical style that looked back to ancient literature for its subjects and to the ordered landscapes of painters like Claude Lorrain for its settings. Bottani spent much of his career in Mantua, where he ran the local art academy, and he had a real feel for scenery: the winding river, the hazy blue mountains, the tall trees framing both sides like stage curtains. The figures are small against all that space, which makes the encounter feel less like a heroic showdown and more like something happening on an ordinary morning by the water. Odysseus reaches out with one hand, mid sentence, and the composition leaves you to imagine what he is saying.
