Cat and Plum Blossoms (section)
By Hishida shunso, 1906
Curled into a soft, round shape, this little cat seems to have settled in for a peaceful nap. Painted by Hishida Shunso in 1906, the work shows a white cat with charming black patches across its ears, back, and tail. The artist used a delicate Japanese painting technique, building up gentle washes of color on silk to give the fur a fluffy, almost touchable quality. Notice how the background fades into a warm, empty space. This was a deliberate choice, letting the animal rest quietly without any distractions.
Hishida Shunso was an important figure in modern Japanese art, working alongside other painters who wanted to refresh traditional styles while keeping their cultural roots. He was known for a method that softened hard outlines, which critics at the time nicknamed the "blurry style," sometimes meant as an insult. Looking at this sleepy cat though, that soft approach feels just right. Sadly, Shunso struggled with failing eyesight and died young at the age of 36, which makes the calm care in works like this one all the more touching.
