Traces of Belonging (section, rotated)

By Julia Etedi

Water is a tricky partner for any painter, and Julia Etedi lets it lead the dance in "Traces of Belonging." Pale washes of blue, gray, and faded pink seep into the white paper, their edges dissolving into soft feathery blooms that no brush could ever plan. The image is broken into sections, almost like a set of panels, with one piece turned so the whole thing feels like a puzzle that was reassembled slightly out of order. A jolt of vivid blue near the middle cuts through the muted tones, sharp and unexpected against everything hushed around it.

The name of the work points somewhere inward. Rather than showing us a thing we can name, Etedi seems more interested in a feeling, the sort that stays with you even after its shape has faded. She lets the paint pool and drift where it wants, trusting the accidents instead of fighting them. That trust is the honest heart of the piece.

Small flecks and stray spots dot the surface too, tiny mishaps she chose to leave alone. Those little marks are a quiet reminder that a human hand made this, weighing at each step what was worth keeping and what could simply be let go.
