Julian Onderdonk

Julian Onderdonk was an American painter often called the father of Texas painting. Born in San Antonio in 1882, he trained in New York under the influential teacher William Merritt Chase before returning home to paint the Texas landscape. He became especially famous for his glowing scenes of bluebonnets, the state's wildflower, spreading in blue drifts under wide skies.

Working in a loose, light-filled Impressionist style, he captured the particular color and heat of the Texas countryside. His bluebonnet fields became so beloved that they helped define how Texans picture their own land. Onderdonk died young in 1922, but his sunlit landscapes remain treasured, and his influence on regional American painting is still felt.
