Rocky hillside quiet pool
By Julian Onderdonk, 1915
Julian Onderdonk painted this modest scene in 1915, and though he is often called the father of Texas landscape painting, you won't find his famous bluebonnets here. Instead, a rocky hillside covered in patches of golden brush rolls gently down toward a calm pool of water. Above it all stretches a pale, hazy sky where soft clouds drift by. The quick, dabbing brushstrokes reveal his Impressionist leanings, a style he absorbed while studying in New York with the celebrated painter William Merritt Chase.
The charm of this piece lies in its quietness. No sweeping views or striking colors compete for attention, just a plain patch of countryside caught on a misty day. A single bare tree rises from the slope, standing almost like a lone figure keeping watch over the land. Onderdonk knew how to spot beauty in humble corners of the world, and this small painting is proof that a landscape doesn't have to be dramatic to be worth a lingering glance.
