Autumnal Woodland
By Walter Moras, 1900
Autumn spreads across this German woodland in shades of copper, gold, and deep forest green. Walter Moras, who painted in Germany around the turn of the twentieth century, clearly loved scenes like this one. A little stream spills over rocks on the left side, while moss coats the tree trunks and scattered stones in bright patches that play against the rust-colored leaves blanketing the ground. Soft light seeps through the branches from behind, drawing the eye toward the warm glow deep in the trees.
Moras made his name with peaceful nature studies, often returning to forests and winter landscapes throughout his career. Nothing here strains for attention or drama. Painted in 1900, this is simply an honest, careful record of a fall afternoon in the woods, the sort of ordinary beauty that many landscape painters of his time set out to preserve. The result is a calm and pleasant picture, easy to enjoy without asking too much of you.
