Cabins by a stream
By Walter Moras, 1900
A hush settles over this German countryside scene, painted by Walter Moras around 1900. Thatched cabins sit among tall trees just beginning to leaf out, their branches catching a soft golden light. A small wooden boat is pulled up along the muddy bank of a slow stream, and a handful of chickens scratch about in the grass nearby. Springtime shows itself in the flowering tree on the left and the fresh green shoots along the water's edge.
Moras spent his career painting the woods, rivers, and modest farm buildings of rural Germany, and this work sits neatly within the naturalist tradition of the late nineteenth century. Painters of that mood cared less about grand drama and more about showing nature as it actually appeared, honest and unhurried. The reflections in the still water and the quiet routine of country life give the picture its charm. It does not aim to dazzle, and that plainness suits it well, offering a simple window onto a way of living that has mostly disappeared.
