Bei Gmund im Herbst
By Marie Egner, 1900
Golden trees rise across this autumn view near Gmund, painted by the Austrian artist Marie Egner in 1900. Their leaves burn in shades of orange and yellow, and through the gaps you catch glimpses of snowy mountain peaks in the distance. A grassy path curves along the bottom, leading toward the shade of the trees. The paint is applied in soft dabs and quick strokes, giving the whole scene a gentle shimmer that fits neatly within the Impressionist style Egner loved. The mood is calm and cool, like a bright afternoon when the air has that first bite of the coming winter.
Egner stood out as one of the few respected women painters in Austria at a time when the field belonged mostly to men. She learned her craft under the landscape painter Emil Jakob Schindler, and she built her reputation on tender scenes of nature, gardens, and blooming flowers. This picture shows what she did best, taking a simple stretch of countryside and turning it into a quiet, welcoming place where the season itself becomes the real subject.
