Marie Egner

Marie Egner was an Austrian painter known for her landscapes, flower pieces, and garden scenes. Born in Styria in 1850, she studied in Vienna and later worked in England, and she became one of the more successful women in a Vienna art world that gave female painters few openings. She was linked to the atmospheric mood painting popular in Austria at the time, where soft weather and changing light set the tone.

Her work moved over her career toward brighter color and looser brushwork, showing she was paying attention to Impressionism without fully joining it. She painted outdoors when she could, and her sunlit gardens and quiet stretches of countryside have a fresh, unforced feeling.
