Landschaftsstuck

By Marie Egner, 1900

A row of trees anchors this quiet countryside scene, their foliage glowing in the last warm light of a fading day. Above them, the sky shifts from soft orange to smoky purple, that in-between hour when evening settles in. Marie Egner painted this around 1900, and it reflects her love of the outdoors and her skill with both oils and watercolors. As an Austrian artist working in a field that offered women little space at the time, she earned real recognition for her ability to capture the feeling of a place.

Egner learned her craft under Emil Jakob Schindler and joined a group of painters who preferred working out in the open air. That habit shows in her loose, unfussy brushwork. The sandy path curving through the field and the low hills beyond are hinted at with quick, easy strokes rather than crisp outlines. Nothing about the painting shouts for attention. Its quiet honesty is exactly what makes it pleasant to sit with, a simple record of a calm evening in the fields.
