A Stream Bed at Labergement Jura Forest by Alfred Munnings

A Stream Bed at Labergement Jura Forest

By Alfred Munnings, 1918

This painting captures a surprisingly ordinary moment in the Jura Forest of eastern France, where a shallow stream has exposed its rocky bed. Alfred Munnings, best known for his spirited paintings of horses and sporting life, takes a quieter approach here, focusing on the geological patterns and textures of water-worn stones. A couple of small figures explore the stream bed, giving scale to the scene and suggesting this was simply a pleasant day's observation in the countryside.

Munnings painted this during his time in France, and you can see how he's clearly enjoying the challenge of depicting all those rounded rocks catching the light. The yellow and cream tones of the stones create an almost honeycomb pattern across the foreground, contrasting nicely with the dark pine forest and rolling green hills beyond. It's not his most dramatic work, but there's something honest and direct about it. The painting shows an artist taking a break from his usual subjects to simply record what he found interesting on a particular day, which makes it feel refreshingly unpretentious.
