A Stream Bed at Labergement Jura Forest by Alfred Munnings

A Stream Bed at Labergement Jura Forest

By Alfred Munnings, 1918

A rocky riverbed spreads across the foreground of this painting, its pale stones catching the afternoon sun in shades of cream, ochre, and gray. The setting is the Jura forest in France, where Alfred Munnings painted this quiet scene in 1918. A dark line of pine trees crowns the far bank, and beneath them a small weir sends a thin sheet of water tumbling down. Two figures in light clothing wade through the shallows, busy with some task by the stream, maybe fishing or hunting for something among the pebbles. Behind it all, gentle green hills roll away toward a hazy sky.

Munnings made his name painting horses and English country life, so this peaceful French landscape reveals a quieter corner of his work. His handling of light is what really carries the picture, from the warm glow on the stones to the cool blue ribbon of the river. The brushwork is loose and quick, in the spirit of plein air painting, where artists set up outdoors to record a scene exactly as it appeared before them. Nothing here is grand or dramatic. The painting simply offers an honest glimpse of a summer day, and that plainness is what makes it pleasant to spend time with.
