Winter Woodland in the Sunlight by Walter Moras

Winter Woodland in the Sunlight

By Walter Moras, 1900

The last light of a winter day slips across the treetops in this peaceful scene by Walter Moras, a German painter who worked in Berlin around 1900. The low sun catches the trunks of the tall evergreens, washing their bark and the heavy snow in warm tones of orange and pink. Down below, a narrow path curves through the drifts and disappears into the trees, leading the eye further into the woods. Snow blankets everything, weighing down the branches and softening the shapes of the bushes.

Moras painted in a naturalistic style, which means he cared about showing the world honestly rather than dressing it up with drama. The magic of this picture comes from a simple contrast: the cool blues and silvery whites of the shaded snow set against the golden warmth of the sunlit trees behind. Titled Winter Woodland in the Sunlight and completed in 1900, it captures that hushed, still feeling of a cold afternoon when the forest seems perfectly quiet and the day is about to fade.
