Autumn forest
By Mikhail Olennikov, 2010
Autumn bursts across this 2010 landscape by Mikhail Olennikov, where a forest glows with rusty oranges, buttery yellows, and golden browns along the right side of the canvas. Dark rocky cliffs pile up on the left in rich purples and blues, giving the fiery trees a dramatic counterweight. Right in the middle, a lone pine rises tall and thin, standing guard over the shifting season like a quiet keeper of the woods.
Olennikov built this scene with fast, confident brushwork and thick smudges of paint, choosing feeling over fine detail. The visible strokes give everything a restless energy, as if the whole forest is caught mid-breeze. His method draws on the plein air tradition, where painters set up outside to capture real light and open air on the spot. The finished work offers a genuine, unfussy view of the fall countryside at its most vivid.
