Louis Gurlitt

Louis Gurlitt was a German-Danish landscape painter active in the nineteenth century. Born in Altona, near Hamburg, in 1812, he traveled widely across Europe, from Scandinavia to Italy, and brought back carefully observed views of mountains, coasts, and open country. He worked in a clear, detailed style rooted in the Romantic love of nature that ran through northern European art of his time.

He was well connected in the art circles of both Germany and Denmark and exhibited widely. His landscapes balance precise drawing with a real feeling for light and space, whether the subject is an Italian hillside or a northern shore. Gurlitt remains a respected name among collectors of nineteenth century European landscape painting.
