Village by the Sea in Brittany

This seaside scene by Odilon Redon shows a cluster of stone houses in Brittany, their pale walls catching the light against a wide blue sky. A curve of sandy beach stretches across the foreground, meeting shallow water that mirrors the buildings above. The whole thing feels sun-warmed and still, with clouds drifting near the horizon on the right.

What is surprising is who painted it. Redon is far better known for his strange, dreamlike work: floating eyeballs, shadowy faces, and fantastical creatures drawn in charcoal. This bright coastal view shows a completely different side of him, one grounded in real places and everyday light. Brittany, on the northwest coast of France, drew many artists in the late 1800s for exactly this kind of scenery. Here Redon set aside his imagination for a while and simply painted what was in front of him, and the result is a plain, honest picture of a small fishing village on a clear day.
