Two women stroll arm in arm along the sand at Skagen, the northern tip of Denmark where the light does strange and beautiful things in the evening. The woman in the yellow hat is Marie Krøyer, the artist's wife, and beside her walks Anna Ancher, herself a gifted painter. Peder Severin Krøyer painted this in 1893, capturing the pale hour when the sea, sky, and beach all seem to blur into the same silvery blue.

Krøyer belonged to a community of artists who gathered at Skagen in the late 1800s, drawn there by exactly this kind of atmosphere. He was fascinated by the "blue hour," that stretch of dusk when colors go muted and shadows stretch long. Notice how much of the canvas is simply empty beach, with the two figures pushed off to the left. That wide sweep of sand and the faint footprints leading toward the women make the whole scene feel like a real moment someone happened to catch, rather than a posed portrait. It is a tender picture of friendship and the particular calm of a summer night by the sea.
