Snow-covered mountain peaks at dusk
By Koloman Moser, 1910
Painted in 1910, this quiet mountain scene comes from Koloman Moser, one of the founding members of the Vienna Secession movement. Moser was best known for his design work, including furniture, graphics, and decorative arts, but in his later years he turned his attention to landscape painting. Here we see snowy peaks settling into the cool shadows of dusk, while the sky above breaks into bands of soft purple and bright yellow.
What stands out is how Moser builds the whole picture from short, repeated brushstrokes. The clouds line up in tidy rows, and the snow and rock are broken into small patches of color rather than smooth shapes. This patterned approach reflects his background as a designer, where rhythm and repetition mattered a great deal. The result is a peaceful and slightly stylized view of the Alps, capturing that fleeting moment when the sun has dropped low but the sky still holds onto its glow.
