Autumn day at a lake in Hillerød

A still lake in Hillerød, north of Copenhagen, reflects a cloudy October sky and the reddening trees along its banks. Peder Mørk Mønsted painted this scene in Denmark, where he spent much of his life recording the countryside with almost photographic care. The reeds in the foreground, the fallen leaves floating on the water, and the birch trees losing their color on the right all point to a specific moment in autumn, when the season is tipping toward winter but has not quite arrived.

Mønsted trained partly in France and built his reputation on landscapes like this one, working outdoors and paying close attention to how light falls on water and foliage. He was hugely popular in his day and remains one of Denmark's best known landscape painters, partly because his work is so easy to read and enjoy. The reflections here are worth studying: the surface of the lake mirrors the trees so precisely that the top and bottom halves of the painting almost fold together, broken only by the ripples and the scattered lily pads near the shore.
