Hebridean Texture II by Scott Naismith

Hebridean Texture II

Magenta clouds stacked over a turquoise sky, with a low band of gold burning along the horizon: this is Scott Naismith's take on the Hebrides, the chain of islands off Scotland's west coast. The Scottish weather there changes by the minute, and Naismith paints that instability rather than a fixed view. Slabs of colour laid on with a palette knife pile up where clouds would be, while the lower half of the canvas dissolves into wet reflections. It is close to abstraction, but the eye still reads it instantly as sea, sky and light.

Naismith trained at the Glasgow School of Art and has built his career around skies, returning again and again to how sunlight scatters through moisture and dust in the air. He is genuinely interested in the physics of it, the way particles in the atmosphere split light into colours that seem too bright to be real. That explains the pinks and violets here, which look invented but come from actual observation of sunsets over the islands. Worth noticing is the small strip of pale, almost untouched canvas just below the horizon, where the sun's glare bleaches everything out. It is the quietest part of a very loud painting, and it holds the whole composition together.
