Crossing (interpretation by Boris Jivkov)
Two enormous cylinders hang over the hillside like upturned jars, their rims lit with a band of orange embers, and nobody in this world seems bothered by them. Down below sits an ordinary wooden cabin with light spilling from its windows, a weathered pier reaching out across a lake, and mist drifting over the water. To the right, half submerged, a group of dark shapes crowned with glowing lights wade through the shallows, trailing roots or tendrils behind them. Whether they are machines, animals, or something in between is never explained, and the picture is better for it.
The scene follows the visual language of Simon Stålenhag, the Swedish painter whose work pairs plain Scandinavian countryside with impossible technology sitting in the background like a parked tractor. This version is an interpretation by Boris Jivkov, working in the same vein of digital landscape painting that has become its own small genre over the past decade. The trick these images rely on is restraint: the strange things are pushed to the edges and the distance, while the warm window of a small house holds the center. One detail worth catching is the reflection on the water directly below the cabin, a thin orange streak that is the only warm color in an otherwise completely blue picture.
