Dinosaurs, Spacemen, and Ghouls

Welcome to the most chaotic film studio you will ever visit. This busy scene, titled Dinosaurs, Spacemen, and Ghouls, comes from the world of Where's Wally, the puzzle books dreamed up by British illustrator Martin Handford in the late 1980s. Known as Where's Waldo across North America, the series challenged readers to find a striped-shirted wanderer lost in massive crowds. This particular picture peels back the curtain on movie-making, cramming dinosaurs, aliens, and monsters onto one wild soundstage.

All sorts of tricks are on display here. Flying saucers hang from thin wires, a fake volcano coughs up bright orange lava, and a huge elephant statue looms over the film crews scrambling around it. A note tucked in the top corner asks a playful question about what is real and what is pure movie trickery. Handford filled every corner with tiny jokes and little characters, all rendered in his flat, colorful style with clean ink outlines. The joy often comes from forgetting to hunt for Wally entirely and just following the dozens of small stories unfolding all at once.

These drawings were never made for museum walls, yet they turned into a worldwide sensation that sold millions of copies. Much of their appeal lies in how they reward a patient, sharp eye. Lean in, scan the crowds, and count how many silly details you can catch before the spacemen and dinosaurs pull your attention away.
