Yellow Seagrass

Bursts of bright yellow tangle with deep blue-black across this large canvas by Romanian artist Andrada Anghel. The paint seems to move, with looping swirls and quick flicks that suggest seagrass swaying underwater. Anghel builds her surfaces with layers, sometimes scraping and dragging the brush so that colors bleed into one another, and here the yellows glow warm against the cooler greens and blues surrounding them.

This is abstract expressionism, a style that grew popular in the mid-twentieth century and focused on gesture and emotion rather than realistic scenes. Anghel works in this tradition, letting her marks stay loose and spontaneous. The title gives us a small hint, pointing toward plants drifting in water, but the painting never fully commits to that image. You are left with the feeling of light filtering through a moving sea rather than a picture of any one thing. Her signature sits in the lower right corner, a small quiet mark at the edge of all that energy.
