Explosion Florale

Pinks, greens, and a single glowing patch of yellow scatter across a deep purple and blue field in Etel Adnan's "Explosion Florale." The title means "Floral Explosion" in French, and the painting earns it. Quick, loose brushstrokes tumble over the surface like petals tossed into the air, with no fixed edges or shapes to pin anything down. The result is a garden in the middle of celebrating, all blooms and no rules.

Adnan was a Lebanese-American artist and poet who came to painting seriously only later in her life. She built a reputation for small, intensely colorful canvases packed with light and the feeling of nature. Rather than copying what sat in front of her, she often worked from memory and emotion, trusting color to carry the mood on its own.
