Squares and rectangles lock together across this canvas, each one carrying its own patch of color the way tiles form a mosaic. Green rules the composition in every shade imaginable, from cool sage to zesty lime, but the eye keeps catching on the bold interruptions: a sky blue rectangle here, a small square of yellow there, and one bright dash of red that lights up the lower half like a spark. The paint sits thick and heavy on the surface, likely pressed down with a palette knife, so that every shape feels solid enough to touch. Nothing here forms a recognizable picture, yet the whole thing hums with the feeling of hills, fields, and open sky.

Etel Adnan, who made this work in 2005, lived a remarkable life as a Lebanese American painter, poet, and essayist. Words came first for her, and she did not turn to painting in a serious way until her thirties, when she began building bright little worlds out of pure geometric blocks. She adored nature, and Mount Tamalpais in California became her lifelong muse, appearing in countless pieces across the decades. Adnan believed painting gave her a way to reach joy that language could not touch, and that warmth glows right through the sunny colors gathered here.
