This piece comes from Etel Adnan, a Lebanese American artist who was also a celebrated poet and writer. She did not start painting seriously until her thirties, and she often worked on small canvases, building her images from simple geometric forms. Adnan loved the natural world, especially Mount Tamalpais in California, which she painted again and again throughout her life. Her abstract works carry echoes of mountains, fields, and skies, all distilled down to pure color and shape. She once said that painting let her express joy in a way words could not, and you can feel that quiet happiness in the warm, sunlit colors of this work.
