Colors Harmony by Keder Girgeis

Colors Harmony

By Keder Girgeis, 2010

Keder Girgeis gave this 2010 painting the fitting title Colors Harmony, and the name says it all. Greens, blues, yellows, and warm oranges tumble across the canvas in thick, lively strokes, building an abstract landscape that never quite commits to a single scene. Some people spot rolling hills, others see a valley or the meeting of water and sky. Girgeis clearly wanted to leave that decision to whoever is standing in front of it.

The texture is what really carries the work. Girgeis appears to have worked the paint with a palette knife, dragging and pressing it into ridges that catch the light and add a sense of depth. A small flash of red sits near the middle, acting almost like a pulse that draws the eye before it drifts out toward the cooler blues and gentle yellows near the bottom. Each color seems to lean on its neighbor, and that give and take is exactly what keeps the whole composition feeling settled rather than chaotic.
