Orange Liqueur (section)

By Leah Gardner, 2010

A glass of Aperol spritz holds the middle of this painting, glowing a warm orange and soaking up the afternoon light. Leah Gardner surrounded it with the props of a lazy day: a halved orange, the tall Aperol bottle with its green and red label, playing cards fanned across the table, and a couple of white dice sitting nearby. The dice hint at a game that got interrupted, maybe when someone decided it was time for a drink instead.

Painted in 2010, the work shows off thick, sure strokes of oil paint. Gardner cares more about color and feeling than fine detail, so the orange slices and the red diamonds on the cards come across as bold shapes rather than careful copies. This puts her in the long line of still life painters who gather ordinary things to capture a small, happy moment. The loose brushwork gives it a fresh, modern feel while keeping that easy sense of pleasure.

The charm here is its lack of fuss. No hidden meaning waits to be decoded, just the plain enjoyment of a cold drink, a sunny table, and a friendly game of cards. Those glowing oranges and reds pull you in and make the whole scene feel like an invitation to sit down and stay a while.
