Ecume 05
By Catherine de Potter, 2010
Catherine de Potter painted "Ecume 05" in 2010 as part of a series devoted to the sea and its constant motion. The title comes from the French word for foam or spray, the frothy white that appears when waves smash against each other and break apart. Bright ribbons of white cut across the canvas at an angle, weaving through deep blues, muted greens, and warm browns. Rather than showing a tidy view of the coast, the painting captures something closer to a fleeting impression, the feeling of standing near the water while it swirls and shifts.
Abstraction guides de Potter's approach here, letting mood and energy take over from precise detail. She builds her surfaces in layers, creating textures that seem to change as your eyes move across them. No horizon or shoreline tells you where you stand, so the scene stays open to interpretation, whether you read it as a wild storm, a gentle tide, or just sunlight bouncing off wet foam. She never tries to smooth out the chaos of moving water, and that willingness to leave things a little untamed is part of the painting's charm. Spend some time with the swirling whites and shifting colors, and the foam almost begins to drift before your eyes.
