Here we have a quiet sunset reduced to its simplest parts. A soft yellow sun dips toward a horizon, casting an orange reflection onto a wide field of pink below. The top half glows in muted green, the bottom in warm rose, and the two halves meet at a thin line painted in peachy tones. There is nothing fussy here, just color, light, and the feeling of a single peaceful moment held still.

This piece comes from Etel Adnan, a Lebanese American artist who was also a celebrated poet and writer. She did not start painting seriously until her late thirties, and she often worked small, building her landscapes with thick strokes of a palette knife rather than a brush. Many of her works return to the same view she loved, Mount Tamalpais in California, though her later paintings became more about mood and memory than any exact place. Adnan kept creating right up until her death in 2021 at the age of ninety six, and works like this one show her gift for finding wonder in the most ordinary sights.

For most people, a sunset is something we glance at and forget. Adnan asks us to slow down and really sit with it. The shapes are flat and almost childlike, but that simplicity is the point. By stripping the scene down to a few warm colors, she lets us feel the calm of evening without any distraction.
