A sunset stripped down to its purest elements greets us in this small, glowing scene. A soft yellow sun sinks toward the horizon, dropping a warm orange reflection onto a wide field of pink. Muted green fills the upper half of the canvas, warm rose spreads across the lower, and a thin peach-colored line marks the meeting point between them. Nothing is complicated here, just color and light and the stillness of one quiet evening.

The painting comes from Etel Adnan, a Lebanese American artist who spent much of her life as a poet and writer before turning seriously to painting in her late thirties. She often worked on a small scale, laying down thick strokes with a palette knife instead of a brush, and she returned again and again to the landscapes she loved, especially Mount Tamalpais in California. Over time her work leaned less on capturing a real place and more on holding onto a feeling. Adnan kept painting into her final years, passing away in 2021 at the age of ninety six.

The shapes in this piece are flat and almost childlike, and that plainness is exactly the point. Most of us barely glance at a sunset before moving on, but Adnan lingers on it, trusting a few warm colors to carry the calm of dusk all on their own.
