Bold blocks of orange, blue, and black come together here in a way that feels both simple and full of energy. A red sun sits at the center, glowing against the bright orange shape that spreads across the top of the canvas like a mountain or a wide rooftop. Below, smaller squares of yellow, cream, and deep red break up the dark foreground, almost like windows lighting up a quiet landscape at dusk. This painting comes from Etel Adnan, a Lebanese-American artist who was also a celebrated poet and essayist. She came to painting later in life and often worked from memory and feeling rather than copying exactly what she saw. Many of her works were inspired by Mount Tamalpais in California, a peak she loved and returned to again and again in her art. Adnan believed color could carry emotion all on its own, and she kept her shapes loose and free, never fussing too much over the details.
