Blue
By Georgia O'Keeffe, 1958
This sweeping field of deep blue belongs to Georgia O'Keeffe, an American artist best known for her giant flowers and the wide desert landscapes of New Mexico. Painted in 1958, "Blue" shows a softer, more abstract side of her work. The rich color pools across the canvas like water or sky, edged by pale grays and shadowy darks that seem to drift and fold around it. There are no clear objects here, just shapes and color that invite you to feel rather than name what you see.
O'Keeffe often said she painted things the way they made her feel, not exactly how they looked. By the late 1950s she had been flying in airplanes and was fascinated by the view of rivers and clouds far below, an experience that shaped several of her later works. You can sense that bird's eye wonder in this piece, where the blue could be a stretch of water seen from high above or simply the open sky itself. The painting rewards a slow, quiet look, letting your eye wander through its calm and moody depths.
