A glowing yellow sun floats in a warm cream sky, sitting above a thin stripe of red and a soft band of pale blue that could be sea or shore. Etel Adnan built this small painting from simple blocks of color, laid down thick and direct with no fussy detail. The result feels honest and quiet, like a peaceful afternoon captured in just a few strokes.

Adnan was a Lebanese American painter and writer who did not fully commit to painting until later in her life, and she kept working into her nineties. Landscapes meant everything to her, and she returned over and over to Mount Tamalpais in California, painting its shape from memory as much as from sight. She trusted color to reach people straight away, without any need for explanation, and once said she painted simply because it made her happy.

That happiness is easy to spot here. The work does not ask for deep analysis or reward close study of technique, but it gives back something gentle and warm, a small painted sunrise that carries real feeling in its bright, unhurried colors.
