The Avenue
By Camille Pissarro, 1879
Painted by Camille Pissarro, this peaceful street scene captures the English village of Sydenham, near London, where the artist found shelter during the Franco-Prussian War. Pissarro fled France in 1870 and spent time in the London suburbs, where he discovered fresh subjects in the quiet roads, churches, and gardens of the area. Here we see a wide avenue lined with bare trees in winter, a horse-drawn carriage rolling along, and small groups of people going about their day. The church tower in the distance is St. Bartholomew's, a real building that still stands today.
As one of the founding figures of Impressionism, Pissarro was fascinated by ordinary, everyday moments rather than grand historical events. Notice how he uses loose, quick brushstrokes to suggest the wintry trees and the pale, cloudy sky. The light feels soft and a little chilly, just as you might expect on a cool day in early spring or late autumn. Rather than showing off, this painting simply invites you to take a slow walk down a quiet road and enjoy the mood of the season.
