Take a moment to follow the lines in this piece. At the top, fiery orange threads swirl and tangle across a smoky gray sky, while down below, cool blue strands ripple through deep teal waters. Right in the middle, two small white birds meet at a thin pole, as if they are the meeting point between two very different worlds. The whole image feels like it is in motion, with all those flowing lines giving the sense of wind above and waves below.

Douglas Smith uses a clean, almost graphic style here, letting color do most of the talking. The warm reds at the top push against the calm blues at the bottom, and that contrast is really the heart of the work. There is something playful about how the lines loop and cross, never quite settling into a clear shape. It invites you to read into it however you like, whether you see sky and sea, energy and calm, or simply the pleasure of watching color move across a surface.
