My Country (rotated)
By Emily Kame Kngwarreye, 1994
Painted by Emily Kame Kngwarreye in 1994, this work bursts with color and movement. Emily was an Aboriginal artist from Utopia, a remote community in Australia's Northern Territory. She did not start painting on canvas until she was nearly 80 years old, yet in just a few short years she became one of the most celebrated Aboriginal artists in the world. The flowing lines and rich pinks, reds, and earthy ochres in this piece reflect her deep connection to her homeland, which she simply called "my country."
The winding shapes you see here are tied to the land itself, drawing on the plants, seeds, and root systems that were central to Emily's life and culture. The pale streaks radiating outward may represent the yam, a plant of great importance to her Anmatyerre people and one she returned to again and again in her art. Emily was known for working quickly and freely, letting her brush move across the canvas with a kind of natural rhythm. The result feels alive, like the desert ground waking up after rain, full of growth and quiet energy.
