Christ and the Disciples Before the Last Supper (Section)
By Henry Ossawa Tanner, 1899
Painted in soft blues and silvery greens, this scene by Henry Ossawa Tanner shows a quiet moment as Christ stands among his disciples before the Last Supper. The figures gather in loose robes near the wall of a building, their forms almost dissolving into the misty atmosphere. Tanner was less interested in sharp details and more drawn to mood, light, and a sense of holy stillness. The cool palette gives everything a dreamlike feeling, as if we are watching a memory rather than a fixed event.
Tanner holds an important place in art history as one of the first African American painters to win international acclaim. Born in Pittsburgh in 1859, he studied in Philadelphia before moving to Paris, where he found greater freedom and recognition than he had at home. Religious subjects became his passion after a trip to the Holy Land, and he painted biblical scenes with deep personal feeling. Rather than grand drama, he leaned toward tender, human moments, which is exactly what we see here in this hushed gathering bathed in blue light.
