From Mleta to Gudauri
By Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky, 1868
High in the Caucasus Mountains, a winding road clings to the cliffs as a small caravan makes its slow way through the pass. This is the route between Mleta and Gudauri in Georgia, a stretch of the famous Georgian Military Road. Ivan Aivazovsky painted it in 1868, capturing the moment when travelers and their carts edge along the precipice, dwarfed by the towering rock walls and the snowy peak glowing in the distance. Mist rolls through the valley below, softening the scene and giving it a quiet, dreamlike feeling.
Aivazovsky is best remembered as one of Russia's greatest seascape painters, a master of light and water who produced thousands of canvases over his long life. Here, though, he turns his attention to the land rather than the sea, and you can still see his gift for atmosphere. Notice how the cold blue shadows of the gorge contrast with the warm earthy tones of the road, and how the birds circling in the air add a sense of vast open space. It is a reminder that even an artist known for one subject can find beauty somewhere unexpected, in this case among the rugged mountains of the Caucasus.
