Heartbeats by Mark Maggiori

Heartbeats

By Mark Maggiori, 2010

A band of wild horses thunders across the dry desert floor, their white and chestnut coats glowing in the last light of day. Dust rises behind their hooves as they run free beneath towering red cliffs, the kind of rugged rock formations you would find in Arizona or Utah. Yet the horses share the stage with something even bigger. Above them, enormous clouds swell upward, washed in soft pink and warm gold, looking almost like they might rumble to life at any moment. Mark Maggiori called this painting "Heartbeats," and the title captures the pounding rhythm of those racing animals perfectly.

Maggiori is a French born artist who developed a deep love for the American West and has made a career of painting its wide, dramatic landscapes. Critics often compare him to the classic cowboy painters of the past, but it is his skies that truly set him apart. He gives his clouds such weight and drama that they frequently outshine everything happening below. Interestingly, before he picked up a brush, Maggiori toured the world as a musician in a rock band, which may help explain the strong sense of motion and emotion running through his work.

The charm of this piece lies in scale. Against the vast expanse of stone and sky, the galloping horses appear small and fleeting, a reminder of just how wild and endless these open western spaces really are.
