Bear

A brown bear moves slowly across a sunny hillside, its thick fur glowing in the warm light of an autumn afternoon. Golden aspen leaves shimmer overhead, pale tree trunks rise like columns, and dark green pines fill the background. Painted by Mark Maggiori, a French-born artist who found his passion in the American West, the scene holds a gentle quiet. Nothing dramatic happens, and that is exactly the point. The bear simply exists in its wild home, at ease among the trees.

Maggiori's path to painting was an unusual one. Before he picked up his brushes for good, he sang in a French rock band. His fascination with the landscapes and history of the frontier eventually pulled him westward, and he became known for scenes of cowboys, sweeping skies, and towering clouds. This bear steps away from his usual subjects, yet it keeps the same care for light and the outdoors that runs through all his work. Loose, confident brushstrokes and a palette of warm golds and greens give the piece a calm, slightly wistful feeling that lingers.
