Skeleton Trail

A lone cowboy sits atop his pale horse at the rim of a great canyon in Mark Maggiori's "Skeleton Trail," painted in 2014. The scene is quiet, the kind of moment where a rider stops to catch his breath and take in a view that goes on for miles. Maggiori, a French-born painter, came to this Western world by an unusual road. He was a rock musician and filmmaker before his fascination with the American West turned him toward the canvas, and he has since become one of the most beloved artists working in that tradition today.

The real magic of this painting lives in its color. Warm reds, glowing oranges, and soft purples wash over the canyon, while deep shadows carve out the rock and give it a sense of ancient weight. Maggiori tips his hat to the great Western painters of the early twentieth century, especially Frank Tenney Johnson and Maynard Dixon, but his landscapes carry a cinematic sweep all their own.
