Winter Roads by Hiroshi Nagai

Winter Roads

By Hiroshi Nagai, 1980

Fresh tire tracks wind their way across a blanket of untouched snow, drawing your gaze toward a wall of pale blue mountains in the distance. A thin band of dark evergreens marks the horizon, and three bare bushes break the smooth white ground with their scribbly, tangled branches. Painted by Japanese artist Hiroshi Nagai in 1980, "Winter Roads" trades warmth for a hushed palette of cool blues and clean whites, giving the whole scene a still, almost soundless feeling.

Most people know Nagai for the opposite kind of picture. Throughout the 1980s he built his name on cheerful paintings of beaches, palm trees, and glittering swimming pools, images that graced dozens of Japanese album covers and came to represent the sunny sound of "city pop." His tropical work practically radiates endless summer, so finding him along a frozen country road feels like a small surprise. The winter setting is unexpected, but the hand behind it is unmistakable.

His signature approach carries over even in the cold. Everything here is flat, smooth, and simple, with no fussy detail or heavy shadow to interrupt the rolling shapes of the snow. The graphic clarity that made his beach scenes so easy on the eye works just as well in this quieter mood, leaving you curious about where that curving road might lead.
