Snowy avenue, a sunny winter's day
By Walter Moras, 1900
A hush settles over this snowy avenue by German painter Walter Moras, where a road lined with trees leads gently toward the horizon. Fresh snow covers the ground, and the bare branches overhead stretch into a pale blue sky. Far down the path, two small figures make their way forward, so tiny that they remind us how wide and quiet this open country really is. Morning sun lights up the golden bark of the big trees in front, a warm glow that plays nicely against all the cool white around them.
Painting around the turn of the twentieth century, Moras built his reputation on landscapes of the German countryside across every season. His approach was rooted in realism, and he clearly enjoyed studying how light falls on a bright, freezing day. The shadows stretch long across the snow, and the tops of the trees glow where sunlight touches them. Nothing dramatic happens here, just an ordinary winter walk turned lovely through careful observation and a good sense of color.
