Wishful Thoughts No 2
By Julia Contacessi, 2010
Warm patches of orange and golden yellow drift across the middle of this canvas, glowing like sunlight breaking through a hazy sky. Around them, Julia Contacessi layers soft washes of cream, pink, and pale blue that keep the whole scene feeling light and unhurried. A hint of magenta peeks out near the bottom, and a few thin lines wander across the surface, giving just enough movement to keep your eye curious without disturbing the overall calm.
Contacessi is a contemporary American artist who cares more about mood than clear subjects. The title, "Wishful Thoughts No 2," points to what she was reaching for here, that fuzzy, hopeful feeling of a daydream floating just out of reach. She does not paint a specific place or thing, but leaves room for your own imagination to fill in the gaps. The result is gentle and open, a piece meant to be felt rather than figured out.
