Sitges Study by Joan Roig i Soler

Sitges Study

By Joan Roig i Soler, 1886

The shoreline at Sitges appears raw and unembellished, shaped by work as much as by nature. Fishing boats rest heavily on the sand, their worn hulls and tilted masts showing signs of daily use. Smoke rises from a small fire near the boats, while two figures wade into the shallow water, absorbed in a simple task at the edge of the sea. The sky hangs low and unsettled, blending softly into the horizon. Painted by Joan Roig i Soler, this study reflects his close observation of coastal life in late 19th century Catalonia. Rather than presenting the seaside as a place of leisure, Roig i Soler focuses on labor, weather, and routine. His loose brushwork and muted tones give the scene a sense of immediacy, as if caught between moments. The painting feels grounded and honest, showing the coast as a working environment shaped by effort, patience, and the steady presence of the sea.
