Sitges Study
By Joan Roig i Soler, 1886
A stretch of sandy beach at Sitges comes to life in this 1886 work by Catalan painter Joan Roig i Soler. This small fishing town south of Barcelona drew many artists in the late 1800s, and its unglamorous daily routines clearly captured Roig i Soler's interest. Weathered fishing boats sit pulled up on the shore, a small fire gives off a wisp of smoke, and two figures bend over the shallow water gathering their catch. Grey clouds crowd the upper half of the canvas, casting the whole scene in a soft, overcast light that feels plain and true to life.
As the word "study" in the title suggests, this is a quick, loose piece rather than a polished one. Roig i Soler built it up with rapid brushstrokes, letting the sandy browns of the beach, the tired boats, and the cloudy sky bleed into each other until the boundaries almost disappear. Nothing dramatic is happening, and that is rather the point. It captures a group of painters who found beauty in the ordinary rhythms of a seaside working town, showing us just an average cloudy afternoon where fishermen go about their business by the water.
