A Jereed Game in Kağıthane by Luigi Acquarone

A Jereed Game in Kağıthane

By Luigi Acquarone, 1850

A sunny field stretches out before us, alive with horsemen darting and turning across the grass while onlookers cluster along the edges. This is a jereed game, an old Ottoman sport played on horseback where riders hurl blunt wooden javelins at one another to show off their nerve and skill. The location is Kağıthane, a favorite getaway near Istanbul along the Golden Horn, where people came to picnic, unwind, and take in lively shows like this. Luigi Acquarone painted the scene in 1850, catching the swirl of galloping horses and bright robes scattered across the open land.

The real star of the picture is the sky. Acquarone hands most of the canvas over to soft, drifting clouds, with neat rows of trees hugging the field and gentle hills melting into the horizon. Down below, the figures shrink to little flecks of red, white, and blue, which oddly makes the whole gathering feel more crowded and cheerful. Acquarone was an Italian painter caught up in the Orientalist trend, part of a group of Europeans drawn to imagining daily life in the Ottoman world. Rather than a tense sporting contest, the finished work reads like a relaxed afternoon in the countryside, easy on the eye and pleasant company.
