Blue sky over a forest in springtime, sporting new anemones

By Peder Mørk Mønsted

A duck skims low across the water near the center of this lakeside scene, one of the few signs of movement in an otherwise still spring morning. Peder Mørk Mønsted painted it with the sharp, patient realism he was known for across Denmark. Trees crowd the right bank in fresh green, their leaves still that pale color that only appears for a few weeks each year. Down at the bottom of the slope, small white anemones dot the grass, the woodland flowers that give the painting its name and mark the true arrival of spring in the Danish forests.

Mønsted worked in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, long after most European painters had moved on to looser, more experimental styles. He never did. He kept refining his precise landscapes, and buyers loved them for exactly that reason. Look at how he handles the reflections in the lake, where the clouds and the far shore repeat themselves in the water with just enough distortion to feel real rather than mirror perfect. The reeds in the foreground, painted stroke by stroke in orange and gold, show how much attention he gave even to the plainest corner of a scene.

Mønsted traveled widely, painting in Italy, Greece, and North Africa, but he returned again and again to the woods and waters of his home country. Scenes like this one were his bread and butter, and while they rarely surprise, they reward anyone who enjoys watching a skilled hand capture an ordinary day exactly as it looked.
