Evening in the Drawing Room. The Artist's Mother and Wife (section)
By Vilhelm Hammershøi, 1900
Two women share a peaceful evening in this 1900 painting by the Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershøi. One sits with her head bent over her knitting, needles in hand, while the other reads quietly beside a small basket. These are not strangers or hired models. They are the painter's own mother and his wife, caught in a moment of easy company. The whole scene glows in shades of gray and deep black, with only faint light landing softly on their faces and fingers.
Hammershøi loved quiet more than color. While many painters of his day filled their canvases with sunlight and movement, he leaned toward hush and shadow, often showing empty rooms or people sunk in thought. Nothing dramatic happens in this drawing room, and that is the whole point. The gentle rhythm of an ordinary evening is the subject, and his honest attention to it is what has kept people drawn to his work for over a hundred years.
