Isles of Shoals coast scene by Childe Hassam

Isles of Shoals coast scene

By Childe Hassam, 1890

Off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine sits a small cluster of rocky islands called the Isles of Shoals, and Childe Hassam loved them. The American painter visited often, drawn to the rugged stone, the open water, and the bright summer light. This scene captures all of that with quick, loose brushwork that lets the rocks shimmer in warm tones of gold, rust, and lavender while the sea glows in cool blues and greens. Hassam was one of America's leading Impressionists, and you can see that influence here in the way he cares more about light and color than sharp detail.

What makes the Isles of Shoals special in Hassam's story is his friendship with the poet Celia Thaxter, who ran a famous summer gathering for artists and writers on the islands. He spent many seasons there painting the gardens, the shore, and the rocks, returning to the same rugged coastline again and again. If you look closely, you can almost feel the water splashing up through the gap in the stone at the center, a small reminder that this quiet scene was alive with the constant motion of the tide.
